A bystander is someone who witnesses something wrong happening to an individual or group and doesn’t do anything about it. An upstander intervenes when an individual or group is verbally or physically attacked or bullied by others and takes action. Being an upstander in the workplace creates belonging and allyship and improves relationships.
Effective July 1st, 2022, Chicago requires managers and employees alike to take one hour of bystander intervention training per year. Emtrain's Bystander Training meets Chicago's one-hour bystander intervention training requirements. For more information on this new requirement, click here
In this training, we’ll define what an upstander is, identify common situations, and the steps to take when you notice something’s wrong. We’ll also share intervention methods and two helpful tools, The Workplace Color Spectrum and Big Gear/Little Gear to help you along the way.
This course teaches:
- The definitions of bystander and upstander
- Common situations a bystander may find themselves in
- Bystanders' responsibility to intervene and why it's important
- The various options upstanders can take to intervene in a situation
